You might be one of the 5,800 USAID staff laid off or on paid leave. Or you might be looking around at the world thinking, too much chaos. Climate, water, politics, conflict, children, you name it, it’s hard to face reality right now – too many are suffering.

I was gifted the opportunity to watch another of Caroline Myss’ videos by my client who loves her, and this one was just as profound as the last one I wrote about. It helped me understand myself, my work, and how to continue living in a world that seems more and more senseless each day. Here’s what I distilled from the video:

  1. Seek light. Grace is light, and it transforms and alchemizes us. In my coaching work, I do guided visualizations to help center my clients. I often talk about light entering every cell of their body. Myss mentions the same – stating that this light is a vibration you are unaccustomed to. It has the force and authority to transform the content of your cell tissue. To erase lower level cell tissue and replace it with the speed of light, so you feel a natural high. She describes it as timelessness meeting time. This is a soul-level connection. It reminds us we are whole as we are. Light recalibrates our life’s compass. Myss says this cosmic light, even a microdose of it, has the power to transform this world. You start to see the light in everyone, and you wish you can take them to the light. She says all humans become lightforce. Instead of becoming impatient, you become compassionate with those around you.
  2. Transcend needs and embody purpose. Myss masterfully describes spirituality as not about getting but about not needing. Many sages have said that we need to be in the world but not of the world. To build the capacity to not be owned by anything, not your stuff, or other’s approval, then you’re free to create the way you want, and you don’t care what people say.
  3. Get help. Inner work is hard. Myss advises not to go into the territory of the soul without a soul companion. This is because once you start pursuing what you might think of as living your life at a deeper level, you are changing your relationship with yourself. This is about reconstructing your relationship at a soul level, and this can be very jarring. The soul does not operate on safety – our nervous system does. The soul is indestructible and thrives in mystery, and I completely agree with Myss on this. The body is finite and senses destruction. Thus, we are already in a paradox – a paradox I live in daily as I deal with my post-traumatic stress, and yet notice my soul guiding my busy fingers along the path of yet another new book. In any given setting, our nervous system will ask if we are you physically safe here but our soul will ask – is it sacred or evil?
  4. Heal pride. Allow soul to shape your reality by surrendering. The way I interpret Myss here is that we are often caught up in the arrogance of thinking we know how to lead our lives – we plan and execute. Then things happen that convince us we are not in charge. We use arrogance and pride to protect ourselves in our vulnerability. By being humble we think we will be destroyed but it’s our greatest protection. Humility allows us to step away from the delusion that we know everything, and allow our soul to reshape our physical world, to benefit what we need, not what we want. In other words, we need to surrender to our soul. In my most loved quote of Myss in this video, “We are not incarnated to shop…we are here to leave the Earth a better place, to discover our power…leave our soul footprint…our unique grace.”
  5. Don’t play victim. Develop your empowerment story. The ego is what complains and keeps talking about its woundedness. The soul develops it’s narrative of empowerment. I was goosebumping as I read this – all my work is about empowerment, and is being driven by my soul – this is clear to me. Because all my inspiration comes from an unknown, mysterious, mystical place. And, I often don’t feel at home on Earth or even in a physical body. I feel formless and irritated by the constraints of my body. And yet, that is the task: to live from the soul level in this finite body, and to leave the Earth better than we found it. Myss says, “Grace is heavenly energy to transform something to something better.”

It’s up to you how you see things, Myss emphasizes, because you’re the only occupant of your body. So, go forth and unleash your life from the soul level. Straddle the light and dark, the soul and ego, and fulfill the purpose for which you were born. Now is the time. Here is the place.

Our purpose is to fulfill our soul’s contract, according to Caroline Myss. Photo by Venti Views on Unsplash
