New Rules of Leadership Part 2
Last week we discussed 6 components of the new rules of leadership by Keith Ferrazzi, together with 3 misconceptions, practices of new leadership, and aspects of re-contracting. As a follow up, we are sharing 6 steps of re-contracting and 8 behaviors that an ‘A team’ needs to practice. These eight behaviors create awakening and awareness amongst the team, re-energizes them and enhances their performance. The six steps are:
- Scheduling a re-contracting meeting with the team at a convenient time considering the teams’ availability and workload.
- Creating the right mental space, including the mindset for this type of conversation, tone used in communication of hope, possibilities, excitement and what a dream team would look like. Using the word ‘we’ for success and not ‘I’.
- Assessing and acknowledging: there are 8 attributes a high performing team commits to-
- Candor or speaking up candidly and courageously in all their dealings,
- Collaboration and feeling the benefits of being in the team
- Teaming out so that they show a united front to their clients and customers
- Accountability to each other, to the leader, and to all their customers or clients
- Development. Are they providing support to each other to grow as individuals and as a team?
- Energy of the team. Are they lifting each other up and keeping the morale high? Are they celebrating successes?
- Relationships are the foundation to team building and a high performing group. Are they practicing honesty and trusting each other? Are they practicing gratitude?
- Why are they here? Are they pursuing innovation, transformation and excellence? Are they challenging the status quo in healthy ways?
- Commitment and Action involves having an affirmation for each of the 8 attributes above, such as, they lift each other up, and reflecting on what the organization will look like if the team fulfills its commitments.
- Picking one area of focus. The team agrees on and addresses one attribute at a time for a month. They discuss the details, move forward with the detailed practices and share the progress before collectively deciding on the next attribute.
- Tying it all to integrity. In other words, being committed to strategy, working on the attributes as agreed by the team and always keeping the goals in mind. Social contracts are just as important for integrity as the attributes discussed above.
