The Behavioral Science of Success: 4 Phases of Flourishing

People often ask me something like this: “What is your area of focus? You seem to do a lot of things – coaching, writing, poetry, cooking…What’s your one thing?”

The quick and most eloquent answer is from John Muir:

“When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.”

My quick answer is:

I help people flourish.

In order to flourish, we need to have our internal and external ducks in a row. For every life that starts to change orientation from being driven by what we think we should do, to what our soul purpose is, a lot of chaos may happen. As I mentioned recently, learning to innovate at the edge of chaos is what nature and good entrepreneurs master.

So, my longer answer is:

From within chaos, I help clients identify direction, passion, and purpose, and thrive as leaders.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared a leadership framework for empowerment and flourishing that describes my approach and the books and courses I’m creating. The framework is called Living and Leading Authentically. Today, I want to go deeper into it to explain how the interconnecting phases in this framework bring us true success.

If we define success as inner and outer joy and flourishing, then we notice that there’s a lot to do to get us there, and to keep us in that optimal state.

Our Living and Leading Authentically Framework contains four Phases of Flourishing that interact with each other dynamically.

From the diagram below, we see that diet is connected to optimal mental wellness and self-love, which is connected to trauma, which is connected to confidence and finding the true self, which in turn is connected to a purposeful career. I do not separate these elements out precisely because they are so intricately connected: I address them holistically as a coach.

Certain new habits are practiced no matter which phase you’re in, because they are so important:

  • Meditation to clear the mind and reduce stress,
  • Affirmations to reprogram negative subconscious habits,
  • Reflection to improve memory and learning, and
  • Optimizing the diet for optimal wellness.

As I’ve noted before, the current workplace climate is like being in a raft in the rapids: we need to know ourselves fully and adapt to change quickly and all the time. How can we do this effectively without healing the root causes of old mindsets and beliefs that keep us feeling stuck, trapped, afraid, or doubting?

The foundation for my work is the Alchemus Prime Diamond Model, which is an integration of:

  1. Behavioral sciences, to understand and change beliefs and habits,
  2. Design thinking processes, to systematically infuse creativity,
  3. Biomimicry principles, to learn from nature’s principles and solutions, and
  4. Meditation practices, to reduce stress and improve resilience.

What is lacking from one discipline or way of thinking is supplemented by the others; I am constantly improving the model with new research and insights. From this foundation, a stronger set of solutions can be produced than from any solo perspective.

Currently, one of my clients is working through all four phases at the same time. She is bravely navigating how to love herself more through better diet and exercise, release old trauma, become her true self by shedding limiting beliefs, AND prepare herself for a new career. She is badass, and a privilege to work with.

Finally, to answer the question of why I do so many things – like writing, cooking, etc. well, that’s because I’m fulfilling my soul purpose as a coach, plant-based and gluten-free cook, author, poet, and beyond. And, the services and products I create, whether they are coaching programs or recipes or my forthcoming writing group, are helping others find their way to flourishing too. It’s all connected, so start anywhere that is you, and discover all of you!

The Phases of Flourishing are overlapping stages of creating a life based on true self, self-love, authenticity, and purpose.
